NUMBER OF HOMELESS LOCALS RISING AT ALARMING RATES
The latest census data shows New South Wales has the highest rates of homelessness in the country…
The news comes as no surprise to Tamworth Family Support Service, which has noted a spike in females living on the streets.
They say drug and alcohol abuse, family breakdowns and mental health issues play a large role in people losing their homes.
“So far this financial year, we’ve actually assisted over 700 people between the two services, whether it’s the youth homeless service or the general homeless service’,” Leigh Smith, Tamworth Family Support Service.
The service is expecting to assist around 1000 people this financial year, with a big focus towards keeping youths off the streets.
“History shows if someone when they’re younger has an episode of homelessness, will more likely have an episode again further on in life.”
