Armed police have surrounded a home in Newcastle with several road closures put in place as officers attempt to resolve an ongoing incident.

NSW police have confirmed an operation is underway near Morpeth and Christo Roads in the Newcastle suburb of Waratah West on Friday.
The operation began about 10.30am with an armoured police vehicle, known as a BearCat, at the scene, according to local media.
The Newcastle Herald reports a neighbour was told by police that someone had locked themselves inside a house with a gun.
