Fire has torn through an abandoned building in Newcastle overnight.
The blaze started some time between 8pm and 9pm in the former Wallsend Squash and Swim Centre on Council Street.
Nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution, including shoppers at Stockland Wallsend.
The fire has caused extensive damage to the building.
Police are still investigating the how the blaze began.
