POLICE URGE LOCALS TO LOCK UP FIREARMS SAFELY
Police are taking the time this Rural Crime Week to remind locals to store their firearms safely and securely.
It comes after new regulations were introduced last month that require gun owners to store firearms at their primary residence in an attempt to cut down on theft.
“We often see large numbers of firearms stolen from gun safes, where they are properly stored, but the property they are on is actually unattended for long periods,” Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie said.
Gun owners also being encouraged to up security where they can.
“Alarm systems, cameras if possible, really securely locked premises is a really good deterrent.”
