POLICE SERGEANT ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTED IN PORT STEPHENS

A 54-year-old police Sergeant has been assaulted during a violent confrontation in Port Stephens overnight.

Police were patrolling Shoal Bay Road in Shoal Bay around 10:30pm, when they saw a man talking to a woman.

The Sergeant approached the man to speak to him about his behaviour, when he was allegedly punched in the head. Both fell to the ground during the struggle.

Another police officer came to assist, and police say another unknown male became involved and allegedly kicked the Sergeant in the head while he was on the ground.

The unknown man has then fled.

With the assistance of nearby security officers, a 19-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault police officer occasioning actual bodily harm and resist arrest.

The Sergeant was treated by paramedics, before being taken to hospital with an arm injury and concussion.

The other officer did not require treatment.

The 19-year-old man is scheduled to appear in court in June.
