AWABAKAL COUNCIL AWARDED $150,000 FOR POST OFFICE CLEAN-UP

The Awabakal Aboriginal Land Council has received $150,000 from the state government, to clean up the Newcastle Post Office.

The money will be spent making the site safer, so that assessors can consider the state of the building.

Since its closure and subsequent sale in 2002, the building has been decaying. Redevelopment has been estimated to run as high as $30-million.

After winning a land claim in 2014, the Awabakal Aboriginal Land Council has been responsible for the site, but the organisation has since gone into administration.

Today’s grant was awarded as part of the Major Works Stream, and was announced by Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, in Newcastle.

In total, $5.4-million across 220 grants has been awarded to councils, Aboriginal organisations, peak heritage organisations and owners of heritage items.

The grants have been awarded in consultation with the NSW Heritage Council.

The announcement marks this year’s Australian Heritage Festival, which runs until 21 May.
