RELIGIOUS TRADITION TO RETURN TO BOGEY HOLE
A long-standing religious tradition will return to Newcastle’s Bogey Hole this weekend.
Each year, the city’s Greek Orthodox church throws a crucifix into the water, as part of a special blessing ceremony.
“It is a prayer for all of those who earn their living on the sea. And at the same time it’s a good coincidence that it is the beginning of the year.”
In 2015, the ceremony had to be moved, due to safety concerns at the Bogey Hole.
This Sunday it will return to the popular swimming spot, for its 60th year.
“Now that everything is done and everything is safe, we can go back to continue the tradition for another 60 years.”
