NORTHERN REGION HAD HIGHEST ROAD TOLL
There were more fatal car crashes in Northern New South Wales over the Christmas-New Year period, than any other region in the state.
Seven of the 16 fatalities statewide occured between Newcastle and the border – three more than the same period last year.
Police say they’re disappointed with the results of Operation Safe Arrival – an 18-day blitz aimed at reducing the road toll.
Almost 300 people were charged with drink driving in the Northern Region, and close to 4,000 were fined for speeding.
The operation wrapped up on Monday.
