HUNTER AT INCREASED RISK OF GRASS FIRES

The NSW Rural Fire Service says the Hunter Region is at an increased risk of grass fires, following recent warm dry weather.
NSW RFS acting manager Inspector Martin Siemsen says local grass has been conditioned by the weather and now presents a serious fire risk.
“With hot and windy conditions forecast for later this week, I urge Hunter Valley landholders to be aware of this threat and take the necessary precautions to prepare their properties”, he said.
Mr Siemsen says grass fires travel much faster than bushfires, because grass ignites more quickly.
The RFS says those living in bushfire prone areas should put fire breaks in place and keep firefighting equipment on hand.
