A Byron Bay father and son team, attempting to break a world record in endurance swimming have hit more than a few setbacks.
Eric and Hunter Helmick set out to swim the length of the Murray River in 90 days to raise awareness for suicide and depression.
A month in, they’re down to one swimmer, ten days behind schedule and have lost half their support team.
“We’ve had two US team members back out due to financial constraints, two more team members are leaving in a few more days from now due to time constraints and our wetsuits are wearing out”
They’ve also lost institutional support due to liability.
To meet the target, the team needed to swim an average of 30km per day for 90 consecutive days.
