Education Minister Adrian Piccoli has announced a piece of land owned by the Education department at Suffolk Park will not go to auction.
The land was put up for sale earlier this month and earmarked for development – a move that was met with heavy criticism.
More than 2,500 people signed a petition opposing the sale of the suburb’s only open green-space.
While the government says it will not proceed with the public sale, those opposed, say it’s too early to get complacent.
“We’re cautiously optimistic, but we’re not over the line yet, we’ll be happy when the land is finally in community hands but it’s a good start.”
The sale will be negotiated with Byron Shire Council.
