NORTH COAST BEACHES TO GET SHARK NETS WITHIN WEEKS

Shark nets will be installed at five north coast beaches in time for the Christmas school holidays.

Legislation to fast track the trial passed through NSW Parliament last night, in response to a spate of shark attack in the area.

“Passing this legislation is an important step towards getting the shark net trial in place on the North Coast by the summer school holidays, by streamlining the approvals process, which is currently spread across various Acts,” said Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair.

The nets will be trialed at Lighthouse Beach, Shelly Beach and Sharpes Beach at Ballina, Seven Mile Beach at Lennox Head and Evans Head Beach.

They’ll be fitted with whale alarms and dolphin ‘pingers’ to deter marine mammals.
