NINTH CASE OF MENINGOCOCCAL RECORDED IN HUNTER
The Hunter region has recorded its ninth confirmed case of meningococcal disease this year, with an infant in a serious condition in hospital.
Close contacts of the child have been given precautionary antibiotics.
Hunter New England Health says while cases of the potentially deadly disease are on the decline, it’s important people are aware of the symptoms.
“Meningococcal disease may be very severe and the community needs to be on the alert for its symptoms. If anyone suspects meningococcal disease, they should seek medical attention immediately,” Public Health Physician Dr Tony Merritt said.
Early symptoms of the disease may include pain in the legs, cold hands and feet and abnormal skin colour.
“The number of cases of this rare disease has been falling over the past ten years due in part to the success of the meningococcal C vaccination program,” Dr Merritt said.
