MENINGOCOCCAL CASE CONFIRMED IN THE HUNTER
Hunter New England Health has confirmed a case of meningococcal disease in one of the region’s hospitals.
In the eighth case of the potentially fatal disease, a woman is currently stable condition and her close contacts have been prescribed clearance antibiotics.
A media spokesperson says there are no links between this case and previous cases.
Up to 10 per cent of patients with invasive meningococcal disease in Australia die as a result of the infection. The first symptoms of meningococcal disease may include pain in the legs, cold hands and feet and abnormal skin colour.
The meningococcal C vaccine is recommended for all babies at 12 months of age.
