BALLINA BEACHES CLOSED AFTER SHARK ATTACK

Lennox Head, Sharpes Beach, Lighthouse Beach and Shelly Beach at Ballina will be closed for at least the next 24 hours, following a shark attack this morning.

The attack happened at Ballina’s Lighthouse Beach shortly before 9am, when a 17-year-old surfer was pulled out of the water by other surfers, after suffering severe lacerations to his leg.
Being the first patrol of the 2016/17 season, lifeguards were thankfully able to clear the water.
The boy was assessed by paramedics and is now in a stable condition at Lismore Base Hospital.
The species of the shark is not yet known, but a NSW Department of Industries helicopter has been diverted to the area to conduct aerial surveillance.
The Ballina lifegaurd jetski is also conducting roving patrols.
