Newcastle has paused to remember the Australians involved in the Battle of Britain, 76 years on.
A special flyover by the Royal Australian Air Force started the commemorative service, which paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the conflict, including a local pilot.
“Pilot officer Crossman was a young Novocastrian. In fact he was born in Queensland but he went to Newcastle boys high school here…”but like another 14 Australian pilots involved in the battle, he lost his life in that battle on the 30th of September 1940,” said Group Captain Terry van Haren, Officer Commanding Number 78 Wing.
Meanwhile this afternoon, students from Newcastle East Public helped mark a milestone for the city’s iconic soldier statue.
It was unveiled 100 years ago, with the monument listing names of locals who died during World War One.
