A school in Newcastle has been evacuated after a student brought a hand grenade to school with her.
An 11-year-old girl found what appears to be a rusty World War II style hand grenade in her neighbours backyard.
Hunter Christian School at Mayfield and a number of neighbouring houses have been evacuated, with parents picking their children up from Wests Mayfield.
Bomb experts from Sydney have been called to remove the item.
