VALE TREVOR WARING

Former Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, Professor Trevor Waring, has passed away after a battle with brain cancer.

Professor Waring began his working life at the BHP Steelworks in Newcastle before studying psychology in 1966 as a mature age student. In 1985 he was elected to the Council of the University of Newcastle and ten years later became a Conjoint Professor of Psychology. Professor Waring served as Chancellor from 2004 until 2012.

“Trevor played a pivotal leadership role in the psychology profession and in the development of suicide prevention policy across Australia,” said Chancellor Paul Jeans.

Professor Waring is survived by his wife Helen and children Janice, John, Cathy and Peter.

  2. One of the pleasures of my life was to be able to work with Trevor. He was an incredible man, and his contribution to others was tremendous. I have to mention his wonderful talent for making others laugh. A truly gifted man. My condolences to everyone who loved and cared for him.
