INVESTIGATIONS UNDERWAY INTO FORMER GASWORKS SITE

Newcastle Council has called on an independent environmental consultant to investigate an area at Waratah, where a small gasworks operated in the late 19th and early 20th century.
It follows advice from the EPA that it may have operated on a site bounded by Ellis, Turton and Georgetown roads.
Around 20 premises are thought to be in the area, with residents advised not to eat eggs laid by hens on their properties or vegetables grown in the soil, until testing is carried out.
