Residents on the mid north coast are being urged to be wary of scammers claiming to be from Telstra.
Since July, police have received numerous reports that people in Port Macquarie and Wauchope have been targeted by the scam.
It’s believed people have taken a phone call from someone claiming to be from Telstra who says their computer has been infected with a virus, or that they are investigating fradulent access to their computer.
After gaining remote access, funds are transferred between the victim’s bank accounts, before they’re advised Telstra has deposited into their account to track the person responsible.
The computer later crashes and the caller requests that money be deposited to various overseas bank accounts.
Police are urging residents to be vigilant and not transfer money to anyone they don’t know personally.
