ROYAL COMMISSION: FORMER REMOVALIST TAKES THE STAND

A furniture removalist, who found pornography at the home of an Anglican priest, says there was also child abuse material.

Gary Askie today told the Royal Commission into child sexual abuse that he worked with John Farragher Removals in 1998 and helped pack up the home of Newcastle priest Peter Rushton.

“I saw a few movies with male people having sex on the cover of them. One of them there was a couple of pictures of a young person,” he said.

He also told the commission he was asked to sign a document, stating that he wouldn’t talk about what he had seen at the home.

“Were you ever asked to sign any sort of document or statement? Yes I was. What were you asked to sign? I’m pretty sure it was something to the events where I wasn’t allowed to talk about it. I was told that the Church knew he was gay and I wasn’t allowed to say anything to anyone.”

The commission continues.
