• Daniel Morcombe’s killer, Brett Peter Cowan, has been injured in a hot water attack in prison. It’s understood boiling water was poured over him at Queensland’s Wolston Correctional Centre by another inmate. Cowan has been taken to a Brisbane hospital for treatment.
• There’s shock and concern in Rio, just hours before the Olympic Opening ceremony – after a Russian diplomat shot dead a robber who attacked his car near the Olympic torch relay, not far from the athletes’ village. Other issues are plaguing olympic venues with concerns over dirty water in the main practice pool and problems with the water flow in the canoe slalom course.
• Barack Obama has taken a fresh swipe at Donald Trump, this time mocking the Republican candidate for claiming the November election will be rigged.
• And heavy rainfall has created a spectacular waterfall along the Yellow River in China’s North-west. The 30-metre drop is the area’s largest ever, making the falls the second biggest in the country.
