12PM NEWS UPDATE: JULY 28, 2016

Here’s Paul Lobb with an NBN News update.

  • A man accused of assaulting a 10-month-old baby on a train on the New South Wales Central Coast has been refused bail. Passengers reported the alleged attack to police at the Woy Woy train station, claiming they witnessed the child being repeatedly abused.
  • Cardinal George Pell has denied groping allegations and accused the ABC of a campaign of media leaks against him. Two men say they were groped as children by Australia’s most powerful Catholic, when he was a priest in the Victorian town of Ballarat in the 1970s.
  • Beach goers in Northern New South Wales have helped save a baby whale, stranded on rocks. Slapping its tail the locals helped try to keep it calm, as others used rope to pull the four metre mammal away from the shore at Kingscliff Beach. The small group managed to push the calf back in after three attempts.
  • The man, who shot U.S. President Ronald Reagan, will soon be released from a psychiatric hospital, 35 years after the assassination attempt. John Hinckley Junior was granted full-time release, after being deemed fully rehabilitated.
  • And our surfers Tyler Wright and Stephanie Gilmore are in form in California, both advancing to the quarter finals at the U.S. Open of Surfing.
