TALKS ON SAVING PORT MACQUARIE KOALAS
Representatives from all levels of government met with conservationists today, to discuss the future of Port Macquarie’s most loved marsupial.
While the local koala population is one of the most robust in Australia, recent figures suggest that could change.
“What makes me really excited is that the people of Port Macquarie are intervening early, they’ve identified some signs that Koalas are in decline,” Threatened Species Commissioner Gregory Andrews said.
The roundtable discussed strategies to protect the animal, agreeing climate change poses the biggest long-term threat.
“And so by tackling threats like chylamidia, which reduce their reproductive success, and reducing dog attacks and car strikes, we can help the koalas adjust to climate change,” Mr Andrews said.
