CONTROVERSIAL MOSQUE DEVELOPMENT APPROVED
Cessnock City Council has approved a controversial development application for a mosque at Buchanan.
Last night’s meeting saw an overwhelming turnout from the community, with both supporters and protestors in attendance.
450 people lodged submissions against the proposal, but councillors decided to give it the green light, saying it complied with the relevant planning provisions.
“Council carefully considered the public submissions and planning merit. Tonight’s decision is a reflection of that”, said Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent.
As well as a mosque, the development will also include a funeral home, an ablutions facility and a picnic and recreation area.
