EXCLUSIVE: URBAN GROWTH’S PLAN FOR HEAVY RAIL CORRIDOR
Urban Growth will today lodge its planning proposal for Newcastle’s former heavy rail corridor, with artist impressions showing what new uses for the site could look like.
It’s proposing to rezone the corridor from railway infrastructure to a combination of recreational, tourism and mixed uses.
The area covers around 4.25-hectares between Worth Place and Newcastle Station, with three main public domain areas around Market Street, Newcastle Station and Civic.
The proposal also suggests matching building heights with existing building heights of between three and nine storeys.
Urban Growth believes this is respectful of the city’s heritage and character, as well as what the community wants.
“The people of Newcastle have told us they are proud of their city and want to see it revitalised into a thriving place that attracts people to live, work, play and study here,” said Newcastle Urban Transformation and Transport Program Director, Michael Cassel.
Newcastle City Council will now consider the proposal before submitting it to the Department of Planning for initial assessment.
