ATO TAX SCAMMERS TARGETING NORTHERN NSW
Police are urging people in Northern NSW to remain vigilant, after a number of taxation scams over the last few days.
According to police, fraudsters are contacting members of the public by phone, and deceiving them into paying sums of cash by claiming they work for the Australian Tax Office.
The targeted areas include Grafton, Maclean and Iluka.
Victims are told they owe money to the ATO and are ordered to make a payment via Western Union or another money transfer agent.
Police say residents should keep personal information and banking details secure, and if contacted by someone they believe to be an ATO scammer, they should hang up the phone and contact the police or the ATO directly.
