SHARK SPOTTERS PROGRAM TO BE TRIALLED AT BYRON BAY

A trial shark spotting program is set to be rolled out at a popular Byron Bay beach later this year.

Funded by Byron Shire Council and the state government, the two-week trial will determine whether Wategos Beach is suitable for a long term program.

Carried out by Sea Shepherd, it’ll examine visibility, spotting distance and the number of swimmers who use the beach.

It follows an announcement two weeks ago that will see a volunteer-run shark spotting program operate between Lennox Head and Ballina.
