GREENS LAUNCH LOCAL GOVERNMENT POLICY

Council amalgamations are shaping up to be a key election issue, with the Greens today launching their local government policy in Maitland.

Part of it includes developing legislation that gives residents the power to oppose forced mergers.

“I think for many people, the disrespect that’s been shown to local council is going to be a vote changer. We’re saying that councils should be respected, constitutionally recognised, properly resourced,” said Greens MLC David Shoebridge.

The Greens also want to see a fairer share of federal funds allocated to small councils, for roads.
