NEW CHOPPER FOR RESCUE SERVICE
A new era is about to dawn for flying rescue services in Northern New South Wales with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service accepting the first of its new aircraft.
The Augusta Westland AW139 was formally accepted by the rescue service’s General Manager Richard Jones at a ceremony in Italy. It’s the first of four that will be based in Newcastle, Tamworth and Lismore from 2017.
The aircraft is larger than the Bell 412 and BK117 choppers being used by the service.
Richard Jones says he’s pleased to see real progress after years of planning.
‘I was very conscious during the handover that it was made possible by the wonderful support the people of the regions provide to the Service to help ensure the safety of our communities. Once again I pass on our appreciation to our sponsors, our volunteers and all members of the community who help to make it possible,’ Mr Jones said.
The chopper is now on its way to Australia and will arrive in June. The four aircraft will undergo a fit out and come into service in the first quarter of next year.
