MEREWETHER BEACH WELCOMES CUTE VISITOR

A Newcastle beach had a very cute, unexpected visitor this morning.

This juvenile ‘little blue penguin’ was found at Merewether, suffering an injured flipper.

It drew a crowd, before a volunteer from Hunter Wildlife Rescue collected it.

The penguin will be taken to a clinic at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo for assessment, and rehabilitation.

Hunter Wildlife Rescue says up to 20 a year can be found on Hunter beaches, and this one likely came from Port Stephens, where they commonly nest.

And while they look adorable – they apparently have quite a bite.
