CALLS FOR SOCCEROO QUALIFIER TO BE HELD IN NEWCASTLE
Opposition leader Luke Foley is calling on the state government to grant Newcastle the rights to host an upcoming Socceroo’s World Cup qualifier match.
In a letter written to Premier Mike Baird, Mr Foley says Hunter Stadium, should be the venue for Australia’s match against the United Arab Emirates – scheduled for March 28 next year.
It comes after Newcastle successfully hosted a semi-final match between the two countries in last year’s Asian Cup.
“Staging a major World Cup qualifier in Newcastle will be a reward for the Hunter’s football enthusiasts, but it will also benefit the local economy by attracting visitors to the region and generating national and international media exposure for the Hunter’s visitor attractions,” said Mr Foley.
Mr Foley has also raised the issue with Football Federation Australia’s CEO, David Gallop.
