The duplication of Newcastle’s Tourle Street Bridge is a step closer to construction, with the state government awarding a tender for the project.
Builder, WBHO McIlwain Joint Venture, was awarded the $103.8 million project, with completion expected by the end of 2018.
The works will provide two lanes in each direction, by constructing a second bridge on the western side of the existing overpass.
It’s hoped the improvement will ease traffic flow for the some 33,000 daily motorists using the major thoroughfare between Port Stephens and Newcastle.
Work is expected to begin on the project next month.
