COUNCIL POWERLESS TO STOP OFFENSIVE VANS

Campaigners looking to rid the Byron Shire of camper vans covered in offensive slogans were dealt a blow today, with Council admitting there’s nothing they can do.
Mayor Simon Richardson says the artwork, while offensive, isn’t illegal thanks to a loophole in State Government advertising legislation.
“Clearly there is an absolute breakdown where language of an incredibly and clearly offensive manner, can be billboarded around a car in public spaces.”
Mr. Richardson will now ask council to write to the state government, asking them to change the law.
