LONE PINE REPLANTED

A significant moment in Newcastle’s Civic Park this morning, with a new Lone Pine planted in the Memorial Grove.
It replaces a tree destroyed by last April’s cyclonic storm.
That original planting, 50 years ago, was remembered by some today – like Kaye Duffy.
“It’s a very very special thing to have that connection, and people have too few connections these days and I think it’s lovely we are able to commemorate that sacrifice and to bring something of Turkey back here.”
Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes says “it’s fantastic this Lone Pine does we’re planting today does come from the original seed from the Lone Pine in Gallipoli.”
The city’s official Anzac Day commemorations begin on Thursday.
