PROMISING START FOR ROOKIE CALLINAN

Merewether’s Ryan Callinan has made a promising start to his first World Surf League event at the Quicksilver Pro on the Gold Coast.

In small onshore conditions at Snapper Rocks, Callinan surfed his way to a combined two wave score of 11.10, just behind Brazilian Italo Ferreira who scored a 12. Hawaii’s Keanu Asing was third.

Great waves were hard to come by in the first heat of the day, but the young tour rookie kept his cool and was unlucky not to finish on top.

His third wave of the heat, in which he scored a 6.27, drew a good cheer from the crowd.

Mick Fanning is due to hit the water in an all Australian heat later this afternoon.
