PUBLIC BACKLASH OVER ‘BACKPACKER TAX’

The National Farmers Federation’s online petition against the federal government’s proposed ‘backpacker tax’ has reached more than 10,000 signatures.
The federation claim the tax, to be implemented in July, would create severe labour shortages and hurt farmers.
There are also concerns it would discourage tourists on working holidays from visiting Australia.
If it goes ahead, backpackers would be taxed at a rate of 32.5 per cent – the same as non residents.
