FAMILIES TO SUE OVER NEWCASTLE NURSING HOME DEATHS

The families of two nursing home residents, who died after allegedly being injected with insulin, are seeking compensation from Summitcare at Wallsend.

Catherine Henry Partners is acting on behalf of the families of the deceased, saying they hope to examine the home’s medication procedures, and pre-screening of staff.

27 year old Assistant in Nursing Garry Davis is accused of murdering 83-year-old Gwyn Fowler and 80-year-old Ryan Kelly, and the attempted murder of 91-year-old Audrey Manuel.

He’s pleaded NOT guilty – the trial date has been set for late August.

Three aged care residents were each allegedly injected with high doses of insulin in October 2013. None of the 3 were diabetic. The injections caused the three residents to become hypoglycaemic.

Newcastle health litigation solicitor and principal of the law firm, Catherine Henry, has been instructed by two of the families to investigate the viability of negligence claims against Summit Care.

“Aged care advocacy groups have long been agitating for the introduction of mandatory staff to patient ratios and rules around appropriately skilled nursing staff in aged care facilities. The civil cases against Summit Care should therefore be of great interest to the aged care sector and those who seek reform” Ms Henry said.
