23,800 MEGALITRES RELEASED TO PUT FLOWS BACK IN NORTHERN NSW RIVERS

Water is being released from Inverell’s Copeton Dam under a plan to improve the Barwon-Darling River system.

Under the state and commonwealth partnership, close to 24,000 mega-litres will be released from both Copeton and Glenlyon Dam in Queensland to assist those suffering through drought in northern New South Wales.

The amount of water released from Copeton Dam will increase from 113 mega litres per day, to 1500 mega litres.

The operation is a first for Water New South Wales, with ‘environmental’ water usually protected from extraction.
