A local teenager has spent Christmas in hospital, with a suspected case of meningococcal disease.
The teen is in a serious condition in a Hunter Hospital, while those close to him have been given clearance antibiotics.
If confirmed, it will be the ninth case of meningococcal disease from the Hunter New England health region this year.
Doctors say while that’s lower then previous years, it’s important to remember up to 10 per cent of people die from the infection.
The best protection is the meningococcal C vaccine.
