WALLABY RESCUED 1 KILOMETRE OFF THE COFFS COAST

There’s been a very unusual rescue off the mid north coast.

A large swamp wallaby was spotted swimming more than a kilometre out to sea off Arrawarra, near Woolgoolga, by a student from the National Marine Science Centre.

She and two men managed to haul the tired animal onto their dive boat.

“I’ve never really seen something like that ever, like yeah I think it’s pretty funny and it ended up being really good so nice ending,” said Laura Sanchez Peregrin.

It’s thought the wallaby, now nicknamed “Swampy”, may have taken to the water while fleeing a dog.

Back on dry land, Swampy had a brief rest, before bounding away.
