A Newcastle surfer has become the first Novocastrian to qualify on the WSL men’s tour in 10 years, with Merewether’s, Ryan Callinan, today edging his way into the elite competition.
Sitting on the edge of the top 10, Callinan’s qualification was dependant on the results of his fellow opponents.
The Merewether Surfboard Club says the result has been years in the making.
“We’ve been waiting for this for a while we always knew there was going to be another Novocastrian on tour, especially someone from Merewether with the club being so strong and to finally have that I think the club is very very excited, there’s a lot of celebrating to be done,” says Jesse Adam from the club.
Callinan is one of five new faces on the tour.
