TRIBUTES FOR ABORIGINAL ELDERS

The Hunter’s aboriginal communities are mourning the loss of two significant elders.
At Newcastle’s City Hall the friends and relatives of Kelvin Dates gathered to farewell the Awabakal elder who died aged just 52.
Mr Dates was known by many as the unofficial mayor of Carrington and was a well regarded identity in the local rugby league community.
Tributes have also been flowing for Cessnock’s Les Elvin.
The Wonnarua elder was a highly regarded artist and reconciliation worker.
He was 77.
