Newcastle detectives have taken over the hunt for a gunman, who forced residents in suburban Kotara into lockdown last night.
Police officers scoured several streets, following reports a male was wandering the normally-quiet suburb armed with a knife and a handgun.
Anyone who saw the man is being urged to contact Newcastle police.
