BONFIRE SETS RACE RECORD IN GRAFTON CUP

Not only was it Bonfire’s first win on an Australian track, the English import set a new race record of 2 minutes and 22 seconds in yesterday’s Grafton Cup.

More than 7,000 racegoers were trackside to watch Blake Shinn’s ride on the six year old gelding, trained by Gai Waterhouse.

Bonfire won by a neck from Kapour, with Shoreham a close third.

The Clarence River Jockey Club says the July carnival has been highly successful.

“We get well supported by visitors, trainers, owners and everyone’s been coming for many years,” said Clarence River Jockey CLub Chairman Graeme Green.

The carnival winds up with the Maclean Cup on Sunday.
