Inverell based Senator John Williams has called for clarity on what constitutes a free range egg.
It follows questioning of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission at a recent Senate Estimates hearing.
The ACCC has prosecuted New South Wales egg producers who it believes are misleading the public.
But it wasn’t able to clearly define a free range egg, saying it should be “common sense”.
Senator Williams says the federal and state government, along with the egg industry, needs to work together to set the standard.
