TINKLER REPRIMANDED OVER CANCER COMMENT TO JOURNO

Newcastle Jets Chairman Nathan Tinkler has been reprimanded by Football Federation Australia after a verbal attack on a journalist.

Tinkler approached Newcastle Herald journalist Robert Dillon after the Jets’ loss to Sydney FC in April and said to him, “I hope you get cancer and die.” Dillon, a Walkley Award winner has been critical of Tinkler’s Hunter Sports Group in the past.

Tinkler confronted Dillon in front of other journalists and told him he was “a cancer” and that the Newcastle Herald was “spreading the cancer’. The FFA later served him with a show cause notice.

The FFA has reprimanded Tinkler and reminded him of his obligations as the owner of an A-League franchise.

In a column written a week after the incident, Dillon said he”was not remotely intimidated” by Tinkler and that his “only real concern was that I was right on deadline”. Dillon also wrote that if Tinkler is “let off with a reprimand, I won’t be whingeing about soft justice”.
