UNE TO RESEARCH AVOCADOS AND MACADAMIAS

The University of New England will soon be a driving force in the avocado and macadamia industries, thanks to a new research grant.

Around $7-million was announced today for a three-year study that looks at diseases in avocados, macadamias, mangoes and bananas.

UNE will be in charge of quality and yield mapping in different growing regions – with a number of other universities also involved in the project.

“University of Sydney are bringing in a robotics faction to it. Central Queensland University are bringing in on-ground sensor component for it. We also have University of Queensland bringing in tree auditing for the whole nation.”

A number of other industries across the country have also received a chunk of the $60 million funding package, including cotton irrigation and pest control.

“And something that’s very important to this area, Blackberries, to make sure that we can take the next step ahead in trying to get a biological control for blackberries.”
