Tamworth fell agonisingly short of a maiden Oztag State Cup title on home soil with the Mixed Under 20s finishing second.
After qualifying fourth in its pool, the home team’s finals charge started with a 12-9 win over the top-ranked ACT.
In the final, an early second half try to the visitors put them three tries ahead.
They traded tries until the end, with the final score reading 8-5 to the Dragons.
