20 fire fighters and three CSIRO researchers are conducting experimental grass burns in Tamworth.
It follows work carried out in Victoria in 20-13, which identified deficiencies in the fire behaviour model.
Once completed, it will reveal whether burns could be carried out at times previously thought impossible.
“The research is really important for the RFS because it’s used to validate the models we use to predict fires so where they go, and how fast they might go.”
The group will work in Moore Creek and near the airport over the next fortnight.
“We’ve got to see if the findings we developed in Victoria are actually happening in New South Wales and then develop a robust prediction system that’s applicable to the whole country.”
